Cases of sexually transmitted infections are increasing in England.

In 2018, there were 447,694 new diagnoses of STIs, a 5% increase on the 422,147 in 2017.

Gonorrhoea increased the most - by 26% to 56,259 cases, the largest number since 1978.

There were 7,541 cases of syphilis - a 5% increase on 2017.

High-risk groups include young people and men who have sex with men.

The most commonly diagnosed STIs were:

chlamydia (218,095 cases, 49% of all new STI diagnoses)genital warts (57,318 cases, 13%)gonorrhoea (56,259 cases, 13%)genital herpes (33,867 cases, 8%)

The number of gonorrhoea cases has been increasing for years among both men and women, despite repeated warnings from public health doctors about the risks of unprotected sex.

Sometimes referred to as "the clap", it is a bacterial infection passed between people through unprotected sex.

I find the statistics interesting and scary but what point are you making or are you just supplying the statistics?

How many have regular checks?

There are lots of good reasons for having regular checks. They are straightforward, they are free (until Brexit and subsequent US 'healthcare' dominance), and they will minimise any damage you do to yourself or others if infected.

They also happily provide free condoms, which, given the number of men who say they practise only safe sex but turn out not to have condoms with them, might help them stay safe.

To my shock, at the ripe old age of 54 I picked up gonorreah through unprotected oral sex this year, my first one. Unexpected and eye opening at the same time. Also having to attend an STI clinic to be blood tested, and swapped in all orifices very embarassing.

So was that gonorrhoea that you contracted from someone else giving you oral, or did you contract oral gonorrhoea from giving oral sex? And did you know who passed it on to you?

How is visiting a GUM clinic embarrassing? If more people went on a regular basis, then perhaps there would be fewer infections. We are all responsible for our own bodies and actions.

Embarrassed? Yes. Standing outside queuing for a clinic with only one purpose, knowing that if anyone saw me would know what I was there for. Plus penile, mouth and rectal swabs aren’t much fun.

I can understand how some people might think it embarrassing going to a clinic, but in reality there is nothing to be embarrassed about. The staff have seen it all before and more!

If you see someone you know, then they are there for similar reasons to you!

So don't come up with excuses not to go to a clinic! Go and get tested on a regular basis.

There will always be some that say that they always bareback and have never caught an STI, but then they probably are rarely tested and could be a carrier of an STI without knowing!

Play safe and get tested regularly!!

If visiting a clinic is a problem, most authorities offer a service where you can order a kit online.

If that's not available in your area then you can pay for one to be sent to you.

I can understand why the thought of "queueing" outside a GUM clinic might be worrying or that someone might recognise you but that's not how it is.

You can choose any clinic miles away from where you live to attend. You can remain completely anonymous if that is your wish. You can just turn up and wait in a waiting room - which will not be full of furtive looking misfits - but is likely to me a mix of males and females of all ages.

Alternatively you can phone and make an appointment and not have to wait around.

The nurses treating you are doing this every day and know all there is to know, not just about the STis, but about the habits of those having sex and what they get up to - they will never be shocked!!

Before leaving you can obtain free lube and condoms and advice sheets on how best to look after yourself.

You can be notified of your results by a discreet text message with either says "NHS reply. Your results proved negative! or "NHS reply. Please call us""

It is easy and worthwhile and can either put your mind at rest or let you know that treatment is available (as almost everything can be treated these days).

What a poor excuse for looking after your health. Clinics have these modern things called waiting rooms and the swabs are simple and take seconds.

If not to yourself, you owe it to those you have sex with.

I've only ever been to one such clinic and I found it embarrassing. Held once a week in a general hospital in a small provincial town. The staff were brilliant. The examination did not bother me in the slightest. However the waiting room did. More like the waiting room for the Jeremy Kyle Show. I was the oldest in there by about 20+ years and, although in casual gear, the best dressed and smartest by a long way. I felt embarrassed and uncomfortable and the long wait did not help

There are also groups like Mesmac in my area who offer testing. There center in York is very discrete, staff are great to talk too and offer advice and products free. I used to attend GUM for check ups but find this a more comfortable experience. GUM can be busy and long waits so the booking service offered at York is great, they will also fit you in if you need help on the spot.

So have you been tested since?

Every time I have been to the clinic, I have been far older than anyone else there, but it doesn't bother me.

If the local clinic is too local and you are worried about tongues wagging, then perhaps try going to a clinic a little further away? Just a suggestion that may be viable. Clinic tests are generally more comprehensive than home testing kits, so a visit to a clinic on a regular basis is worthwhile.

Soooooo many errors in your posting: It is their NOT there, it is spelled discreet, to NOT too. And GUM means Genito-Urinary Medicine.

And GUM does NOT refer to any organisation specifically! Just a type of clinic!

I have a test regularly and find the waiting times are quite long.Staff are professional though.

I can't ever make a telephone appointment.

I don't see why any one should be embarrassed by the tests,as if you need them done it probably means you have already had all your personal parts been touched intimately by a stranger or perhaps more.

Bet you weren't embarrassed then.

Lol. Maybe those who are very active sexually or promiscuous should move to Buckinghamshire.

The clinic I use a couple of times each year is open 5 days per week all day and Sat mornings by appointment.

Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings it is walk in, so you just go in and wait. All other days and afternoons are by appointment.

They want you diagnosed quickly and when I’ve phoned I can always get in the next day.

It’s attached to the local hospital and the biggest problem is finding somewhere to park.

How silly of us all. We thought this was a thread about sexual health and not a test of our ability to use the English language correctly

Incidentally I have consulted three well known dictionaries and just cannot find this strange word 'soooooo'

I have not been tested since but I have not indulged in anal sex since. I know that does not let me off the hook. Perhaps in future I will go to a larger town. Stuck in a room for over an hour with some pretty undesirable types was very off-putting and I came close to walking out. Perhaps I was being over sensitive.

It's no different to a GP waiting room apart from the fact that they specialise. Where I go, it's mixed sex too (I think there are 2 o's).

Just suck it up. Be responsible, get yourself checked, it's easy, quick, even anonymous. They're professional, calm, know what they're doing. Take a book you can wait for hours.

One thing, go early. Pick a seat in the waiting area. The next person will sir as far away as possible, the next one equidistant from the pair of you, and do on, until the magical moment there's no space free that isn't next to someone else, then they're faced with a choice, where do they sit? Next to a man, a woman, The healthiest looking, the opposite of who they'd pick as a partner, someone they fancy, or something else again. It's quite good fun watching while you wait for your turn. Of course if you get there late who do you sit next to? How do they feel about it? But to find out, if you have any doubts, worries, itches, rashes, burning, bits dropping off, be responsible and get yourself checked. Then you can fuck with gay abandon! Hehehe.

Home testing kits are great … not quite as thorough as attending a clinic, I admit, but it covers the important bases … freetest dot me is the one I use … very discreet, secure, efficient and surprisingly quick as well …

I'd like to find a self-test where they don't send a kit to your home but you can pick it up somewhere.

I share a letterbox with people I don't want to know about my habits.

Anyone know of any?

I found it very different to a GPs waiting room. As I said before more like a Jeremy Kyle waiting room. Plus small, cramped and over hot[Yes you did use the right 'too' in that context, so you will be spared the wrath of the Grammar-Master ]

This doesn't make sense! What happens when you have a parcel delivered? Surely you don't discuss with your neighbours every parcel/letter that you receive?

I come home sometimes to find my post opened, claiming a mistake. Parcels are regularly scrutinised.

Perils of sharing a location.

This sounds very much like a Police matter as it is illegal to open or interfere with another person's mail. In the USA it is a Federal Offence.

It comes in a small, discreet, brown box, about the size of a paperback, so that it fits through the letterbox … and there are no logo's or anything like that. It is a package, so not like receiving a circular that you might open by mistake ... But if you are that worried, have it delivered to your work … I'm sure they wouldn't open mail addressed to you, would they?

Please forgive me laughing at anyone on here judging the people next to them at a sexual health clinic. Seriously! Sexual health is the ultimate republic. Here we are all equal and, do you know, i have always found the nurses and doctors to be kind and understanding of all of us. Keep safe, keep your partners safe, visit a clinic. Our special bit of the NHS, use it or lose it.

Happy to oblige and make you laugh. No doubt my previous comments did come across as sounding rather superior and snobbish. In truth probably more out of paranoia imagining what all these 20 something year old where thinking when glaring at me with disdain. I do agree with you whole-heartedly about keeping this necessary sector of the NHS alive but in future I would be tempted to go private even though I can ill afford it.

So, you have a discharge or other symptom, send for a test kit, wait several days while it arrives (whilst your symptoms get worse), do the test and send it back and wait for the results (several more days). By this time you might be very poorly and still not know what's wrong. You then get the results, but no treatment. So it's off to the GP or clinic to have the tests re-done and the treatment to be given.

In the age of cutbacks, I certainly hope this sector of the NHS is kept alive! Some clinics are run by Councils, and those are under even more pressure to close.

As to being glared at with disdain, everyone I have been, everyone waiting is very much minding their own business and pretty much avoiding looking directly at anyone else!

Erm … Metropolis … If you have a discharge, and are actually showing symptoms, then you are a fool if you don't seek immediate medical attention. If you have a headache, do you order aspirin from Amazon??

Home testing kits answer the problem being highlighted in this thread about people's fear or embarrassment of going to a sexual health clinic for a regular check up … A little perspective on the discussion, perhaps … !?

"I come home sometimes to find my post opened, claiming a mistake. Parcels are regularly scrutinised.

Order a kit, when you come home and it's opened go to the door of those responsible and ask for a hug. When they cower away from you screaming Unclean! Unclean! Burst out laughing and tell them "maybe that will stop you interfering with my post! I've reported you to the Police and the Royal Mail". Plus, you ciukd open their post, or order them something that would compromise one to the other. Animal based dildo, gay porn, something like that. They'll be too busy screaming at one another to worry what you might have.

Your best bet, go to the clinic or your GP. It's very anonymous, the worst thing about in can be the wait. Sometimes there's a very long queue. I'm lucky I have a medical condition where sitting in hot stuffy rooms makes me incredibly prone to a blackout, idiopathic vasovagal syncope, aka he faints, we've no idea why. I mentioned that to he nurse, got seen very quickly. Someone being wheeled out on a stretcher isn't a good look.

If you do go then don't have a wee before you go, I was there ages after just trying to squeeze out a few drops.

That reminds me of an amusing incident a few years ago. A friend used to run a café with 2 or 3 flats above it. I happened to be there the one morning when the post arrived with several small packages of stuff he had ordered. He started undoing them and out of the one he pulled a large cock and balls replica dido. It was addressed to one of the lads who lived in the flats. Admittedly we had a good laugh before resealing it and putting it by the flat door. Fortunately this happened in the kitchen away from the eyes of the customers.
